InnerPeace Is Forever Free Software
In English, we use the word free for two distinctly diffenent meanings. There is
free meaning no charge, as in "free lunch," and free meaning not bound, as in
"free speech."
Inner Peace is free is both respects.
There is No Charge for Inner Peace
Inner Peace is priceless.
There is no charge for it.
There are no advertisments.
There are no solicitations.
Inner Peace is Unshackled
You are free to do virtually anything with InnerPeace Software: copy it, change
it, give it away, distribute it for a fee, etc.
What you cannot do is restrict its freedom.
As you pass it on, even in a different form,
anyone else who gets it down the line from
you is also able to freely use, copy, and
change it, as well as your additions and changes to it.
Inner Peace is Forever Free
As of 2002, most software is still proprietary software, in which most of the
rights, particularly the rights to copy, modify, and distribute the source code,
are owned by the developer. It is enslaved software.
There is a rapidly growing trend in which more and more software is
being developed as "free" software. (A slightly different category
is sometimes called "open source".) With free software,
anyone has the right to copy, modify, and distribute the source code.
Inner Peace fits within the definitions of both free software and open source
software.
However, not all free software is "Forever Free" software. Some
free software is licenced in such a way that it can be reenslaved
again. If the code is included into proprietary software, users of that
software get no rights to the source code. This is a problem with
all public domain software and some open source software.
To avoid such these problems, we make our software "Forever Free" and encourage
authors to do so also. The
GNU General Public License
is the best vehicle we found for doing this.
Forever Free software is fully emancipated and cannot be enslaved. It is free
software, and it is also open source software, but in a special, even more open,
way. Users get all the the rights to the source code, except the right to
reenslave it. When the code is included in other software, that code is also
Forever Free.
Forever Free software is licensed in the same way as what is also sometimes
referred to as "copylefted" (as opposed to copyrighted) software.
For a more thourough discussion of free software and software rights, visit the
Free Software Foundation
and the
GNU Project.
Can an Idea Be Owned?
Back in the industrial age, there were some reasonable arguments for ownership
of ideas. Someone could develop an idea such a new and truly unique kind of
toaster, for example, and earn royalties if people used that idea. This was said
to encourage creativity and was, according to some, good for humanity.
In today's information age, the arguments for ownership of ideas are much more
questionable. People now obtain ownership rights to ideas which are the
equivilent of owning the rights to making toast, no matter how it is made --
even with technologies that haven't even been created or discovered yet. There
is less and less evidence that this encourages creativity or is good for
humanity.
